CALOSSO DOC

Gamba di Pernice

A rediscovered heritage of one of the oldest Piedmontese vines, Gamba di Pernice it means Leg of Partridge or owes its name to the particular red color of the peduncle of the bunch. The DOC Calosso, one of the smallest denominations in Italy, was founded in 2011, after more than 20 years since the return of this ancient variety, unfortunately lost in the '900 until its rediscover since the 90s, in the municipality of Calosso. Once known in the Alba area as Pernicine, the Gamba di Pernice, also known as "Gamba Rossa" (Red Leg) or "Imperatrice della Gamba Rossa" (Queen of the red leg), is a rare vine today, from which one derives a black berry grape already mentioned by Nuvolone in 1798. The wines with denomination of controlled origin "Calosso" must be obtained from grapes from the Gamba Rossa or Gamba di Pernice vine from 90% to 100%; up to 10%, jointly or severally, can contribute to other non-aromatic black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Piedmont Region. Before going on the market the DOC want a minimum of 20 months of aging and 30 months for the Riserva version must run. Its production is allowed in the municipalities of Calosso, Costigliole d'Asti and Castagnole delle Lanze. Today the hectares are about 12, with less than 10 companies to produce it, including ours. Upon visual examination, the Calosso shows a nice ruby red color, on average; it is a very particular wine with an olfactory test, characterized by intense spicy and balsamic aromas reminiscent of green pepper and other oriental essences, with a fruity that is expressed mainly in the aromas of jam and cherry in alcohol. On the palate it is expressed with a soft tannin and a medium body, given by the low alcohol content (13% VOL) which gives the wine an incredible drinkability. An elegant, long-lived wine of great complexity that can be aged 5-15 years.
